Maryland's Outstanding Eminent Domain Attorney, Joseph Suntum, Appointed

Joseph Suntum has been appointed the Maryland representative of Owners’ Counsel of America.

Joe does more than succeed James L. Thompson. James L. Thompson, the former Maryland State Bar President, is a little ikon in the field of eminent domain and business valuation. Joe Suntum, under the tutelage of Mr. Thompson, offers outstanding abilities, and deserves the honor of his elevation to a Membership in the Owners’ Counsel of America.

Jacksonville, Florida (PRWEB) February 07, 2013

Joseph P. Suntum, Esq. of Miller, Miller & Canby in Rockville, MD has been selected as the Maryland representative of the Owners’ Counsel of America, a nationwide network of experienced eminent domain and property rights attorneys dedicated to representing landowners threatened by condemnation and related property valuation litigation. Mr. Suntum succeeds his partner, James L. Thompson, Esq., who has been named as an Emeritus Member of the association.

“It is an honor to be appointed as the Maryland Member of the Owners’ Counsel of America and to follow in the footsteps of my partner, Jim Thompson,” said Suntum. While a major focus of his practice is the representation of Maryland and D.C. property owners in eminent domain litigation, Mr. Suntum also practices in the areas of real estate litigation, complex business litigation and appellate advocacy. He is among the few exceptional trial lawyers who have successfully tried both murder cases and multi-million dollar civil actions.

Mr. Suntum received his bachelor’s and Juris Doctor from the University of Maryland. Following law school, he clerked for the Honorable Elsbeth Levy Bothe in the Circuit Court for Baltimore City. Before joining Miller, Miller & Canby, he served four years as an Assistant Public Defender for Montgomery County. Mr. Suntum is a member of the American Bar Association, the Maryland Bar Association, and the Bar Association of Montgomery County for which he served as Secretary, 1995-1996 and on the Executive Committee, 1997-1999. He has also served on the Board of Directors of Montgomery General Hospital, 2003-2009, and on the Board of Directors of the Montgomery County Bar Foundation, 2005-2009.

In addition to his legal practice and leadership positions, Mr. Suntum frequently speaks at continuing legal education conferences, including the national Eminent Domain and Land Valuation Litigation and Condemnation 101 courses presented annually by the American Law Institute. He also regularly publishes articles relating to issues arising in condemnation litigation. Mr. Suntum has been recognized by Super Lawyers and has received the highest peer review rating, AV Preeminent, from Martindale-Hubbell®.

“We welcome Joe Suntum as the Maryland representative of Owners’ Counsel. Joe, his partner Jim Thompson, and Miller, Miller & Canby have had great success protecting property owners throughout Maryland and D.C.” said Cathy Newman, Owners’ Counsel of America Executive Director. “OCA and its member-attorneys are devoted to defending private property ownership throughout the country and pledge to assist Joe and his firm with any resources we can offer to protect and defend the property rights of Maryland landowners.”
